When a small turboprop airliner crashes in the Rocky Mountains west of Denver, the
only survivors are a man and a boy sitting far back in the tail of the plane; Jason,
a thirty-two year old confirmed bachelor with an aversion to commitment, and Billy,
a twelve year old foul-mouthed boy-genius with an attitude problem. For the first
three days they huddle in the wreckage of the airplane waiting to be rescued, and
then, fearing they might be snowed in for the winter, they spend another five days
hiking back down out of the rugged high-country wilderness. Though initially
strangers, a close father-son bond develops, and Billy wants Jason to become his new
dad. Jason is reluctant to take on such a responsibility, but he does finally agree
to the idea providing Billy will try to clean up his act. When they finally get back
to Denver, however, Jason discovers that things are not altogether what they had
seemed.

Harold Hansen is a retired NASA Senior Project Engineer who helped pioneer the
Manned Space Program at the Kennedy Space Center. He was born and raised in Flint,
Michigan, is a World War II Veteran, and received his engineering degree from Wayne
University in Detroit. He has two children and two grandchildren and currently lives
in Tallahassee.
